What Does a Factory Circuit Board Manufacturer Do?

A factory circuit board manufacturer converts electronic design automation (EDA) schematics and PCB layout files into the physical bare boards used in products like laptops, mobile devices, and advanced computer hardware.factory circuit board manufacturer This process involves a number of stages including product conceptualization, schematic entry, and circuit board layout and design. The resulting PCBs are then subject to comprehensive functionality testing.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) consist of many components, such as resistors, capacitors, and diodes, that are connected by wires to form a functional electrical system. A factory circuit board manufacturer produces a wide range of types and sizes of PCBs, from simple single-sided PCBs for basic electronics to multi-layered, double-sided boards with multiple drilled holes for complex applications.

The manufacturing process begins with the fabrication of a patterned substrate. The raw panel is cleaned to remove contaminants and then a layer of uniform photoresist is applied over the surface of the panel, preparing it for imaging. The panel then undergoes a develop, etch, and strip line where the developing and etching chemicals are continuously rinsed to maintain consistent chemistry based on panel height and copper etch thickness. Proper spray pressure and distribution of the chemicals are vital to achieving accurate development, etch, and strip results.

Once the photoresist is stripped, a chemical etching process exposes the bare copper substrate to be used for the circuit traces and provides conductors for the circuit board. The resulting copper is hardened and then coated with a thin layer of solder mask to protect it from corrosion and provide an aesthetic finish for the board.

During the drilling phase, an X-ray machine locates drill spots for vias and plated through-holes and then precision registration holes are drilled to match the original PCB design files. The inner layers are stacked together with sheets of pre-impregnated epoxy-fiberglass material (prepreg) between them and then the outer copper layer is bonded to these elements using heat and pressure. The registration holes allow the inner layers to be aligned, and automated optical inspection (AOI) systems ensure the copper patterns correspond to the original design files.

A legend, or silkscreen, is printed on the component side of a printed circuit board to indicate part numbers, symbols, switch settings, and test points. The legend is also helpful in identifying the PCB during assembly, servicing, and use. Traditionally, the legend was printed with screen-printed epoxy ink but liquid photo imaging has replaced this method.

As the demand for smaller, more efficient electronics continues to grow, factories are embracing eco-friendly practices in their production processes to reduce waste, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. A commitment to sustainability also helps manufacturers comply with global regulatory standards for environmental and safety regulations, while enhancing production efficiency and quality. In addition to supporting sustainable manufacturing practices, a manufacturer’s sourcing policy is an important consideration for consumers and business customers.
